Early life
Velasquez attended and was an altar child at St. Mary of Assumption School and St. Louis de Montfort School. He attended St. Joseph High School (Santa Maria, California) and Cornish College of the Arts (Seattle, Washington), where he studied drawing, sculpture, and performance art. Velasquez is an Eagle Scout and a member of the Elks. He has been working at his family's restaurant, Tom's Take-Out, since he was 14 years old, most recently as a fry cook. After photographing his own performance art work, he discovered his passion for photography.
Career
Velasquez appeared in the Los Angeles, California open casting call for Bravo TV's art-themed reality television show Work of Art: The Next Great Artist. He was chosen to be a contestant and appeared on 8 of ten episodes until being disqualified during episode 8: Opposites Attract, a Heaven and Hell-themed collaborative challenge with co-conductor Peregrine Honig. Honig wanted to portray hell through Velasquez's abdominal scarcity, as well as a photographic record of his bout with diverticulitis. Although Mark tried to fight back, insisting that he didn't believe that the scar represented hell, he eventually relinquished. The judges found the term "uninspiring and cliché." When announcing the judges' decision that Velasquez will not continue, Host China Chow notably "fought back tears."
Show & Tell, an 80-page hardcover book containing Velasquez's photographs of six models who have influenced milestones in his early career, was released in May 2010. The book includes reflections and friendships with each model, as well as how both have changed over the course of their friendships.
Velasquez's collaborator Michael Neff launched NSFW magazine in November 2010. NSFW, which stands for Not Safe For Work, is a quarterly magazine distributed in the United States. Each issue is centered on a theme and includes photographs and writings by Velasquez, a Hilary Underwood column, and photographs of model Kacie Marie.
