An Australian teacher teaching in a multinational school in the Congo was killed after his teacher was allegedly poisoned by his drink. Mark Ciavarella, 57, of Leeton, NSW, moved to Africa six years ago, first for the American International School teaching English and music and then to the French Consular School. Clement Bebeka, his flatmate and lover, has been charged with murder by local police who will reportedly testify by videotaped confession at his trial in Brazzaville's main court. On October 26, 2022, Mr Ciavarella's brother was reported missing in Australia, after he lost touch and suspected something 'untoward' had happened in the notoriously volatile and conflict-stricken region.

Mark Ciavarella (pictured left), 56, who hails from Leeton, NSW Riverina, has been living in the Republic of Congo for more than six years. On October 26, he was last seen in Brazzaville, the country's capital, before mysteriously vanishing without a trace. Brazzaville has a reputation for organised crime, with visitors warned of the dangers that the city faces as local gangs roam the area. Political instability, civil war, and the constant threat of violent coup plots have bounded the troubled nation.
