Margaret Olley Life

Margaret Hannah Olley (24 June 1923 – 26 July 2011) was an Australian painter.

More than ninety solo exhibitions have been held.

Early life

Margaret Olley was born in Lismore, New South Wales, Australia's first lady. She was the eldest of three children of Joseph Olley and Grace (née Temperley). In 1925, the Olley family moved to Tully, Queensland, with Margaret boarding at St Anne's in Townsville, 1929, before returning to New South Wales in 1931. Margaret and her family moved to Brisbane in 1935, with Margaret remaining to attend Somerville House in Brisbane during her high school years. She was so fixated on art that she dropped one French class in order to take another art lesson with instructor and artist Caroline Barker.

Margaret began classes at Brisbane Central Technical College in 1941 and then moved to Sydney in 1943 to enroll in an Art Diploma program at East Sydney Technical College, where she graduated with A-class distinctions in 1945.

Career

Olley concentrated on still life and colour.

"Margaret Olley has reached the flood tide of her art and has risen to the top of our artists' list, but Brisbane Art Gallery has shown no interest in her work," James V. Duhig wrote on her 1962 sell-out show; "Mett Olley has joined the flood tide of her art and has risen to the top of the top ten artists list.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales held a major retrospective of her work in 1997. In 1947, she was awarded the inaugural Mosman Art Prize.
