Claire and I had been going out for three years together, and it was time for them to live together. We've decided against it. I couldn't live in her house in Battersea, South London; it was too clean, white, and immaculate for me. I'd be afraid to sit down. She could not live in my battered Victorian home near Hampstead Heath, North London, because it would annoy her; she'd still be keen to change it all. We continued to live alone, each in our house, but we were still meeting all the time and going on a lot of holidays together. I had no idea a few years ago. If I could not bear to move into her house, or she into mine, what if we started off afresh in a completely new house - buy something new to both of us? We decided that this was a good idea and our minds were vaguely shifting to Hastings or Rye on the Sussex coast when we received an invitation from a friend of Claire's called Donna. She and her partner Peter lived on the Isle of Wight part-time.
