She is best known for her role in Latin American Idol.

Career
Castillo made her debut in the music industry in the auditions for the third season of the show Latin American Idol in 2008. She was chosen to attend the concerts to see if she would be selected for the performances. She was selected on the third workshop and later made it to the top ten.
Castillo defeated Margarita Henrquez in the finals. Castillo finished second on the show, but later it was revealed that she received the same rewards as Margarita Henro obtained. She was granted a Sony BMG music contract, a Westwood Entertainment deal, and an agent. Toyota Latin America gave her a Toyota. She was given a Toyota in Latin America. The National University gave her the opportunity to study any field she desired and giving her therapy for her voice when she returned to Costa Rica after she appeared on the show.
In the fall of this year, Mara José's debut album would be released. The self-titled album debuted on Costa Rican albums, in the top ten. In addition, its lead single debuted on the top 40 Costa Rican songs on the top 30, gaining one of the year's best debuts on the chart. Sony BMG has rated the album as Gold. "Abre Tu Corazón," the album's lead single, premiered on radio stations on November 10, 2008. She was selected as the head of El Festival De La Luz, a Costa Rican festival (in English: The Light Festival). Johnny Araya, San José's mayor, selected her.
She performed "Para Siempre," which is set to be included on her forthcoming album, on the 40 Principles events. It has been the only song to be announced to be on the album to date. Castillo said that the song is "one of her favorites." Castillo also said she would have a "new look" and that she has plans to change her stage name to MaJo.
