Iran election goes into extra time as hardliners split their vote allowing reforming cardiac surgeon into final two as millions stay at home in protest

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 29, 2024
Iran is heading for a rare runoff election pitting a little-known 'reformist' against a hardline former nuclear negotiator following the lowest-ever poll turnout in the Islamic Republic's history. Masoud Pezeshkian, the ostensibly 'moderate' option, bested the ultra-conservative candidate Saeed Jalili but fell short of the 50 per cent needed to secure majority. Iran's interior ministry has confirmed the second round of voting will take place on July 5. Pezeshkian, 69, received 10.4 million votes while Jalili, 58, received 9.4 million of 24.5 million cast in Friday's election, though 61.5 million Iranians were eligible to vote on Friday. Low voter turnout is seen to reflect deepening public frustration following years of economic strife and political repression.

Iran's firebrand ex-ruler Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is BARRED from running for president after 'Butcher of Tehran' Ebrahim Raisi's helicopter crash death

Iran's firebrand ex-ruler Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (pictured, left) has been barred once again from running for president after the 'Butcher of Tehran' Ebrahim Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash death last month. The middle eastern country's Guardian Council approved six names, including hardline parliament speaker, to battle for the role at the election on June 28. But Ahmadinejad's name was not on the list, drafted by a panel of clerics and jurists ultimately overseen by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Holocaust-questioning former president is known for the crackdown that followed his disputed 2009 re-election and increasingly challenged Khamenei toward the end of his term. He was also disqualified in the last election by the panel. The council's decision represents the starting gun for a shortened, two-week campaign to replace Raisi, a hard-line protege of the Supreme Leader once floated as a possible successor for the 85-year-old cleric.

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Monday praised Hamas's unprecedented October 7 attack against Israel and predicted the 'destruction' of their common enemy. Khamenei, 85, was speaking at an event to mark 35 years since the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic which replaced a US-backed monarchy. He said the October 7 attack by Palestinian Islamist militant group Hamas 'was a decisive blow to the Zionist regime' and put Israel 'on the path that will only end in its destruction'.

Iran´s hard-line ex-leader Ahmadinejad registers for...

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 2, 2024
Iran's hard-line former leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has registered as a possible candidate for the presidential election, seeking to regain the country's top political position after a helicopter crash killed President Ebrahim Raissi. The populist former leader's registration puts pressure on Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In office, Mr Ahmadinejad openly challenged the 85-year-old cleric, and his attempt to run in 2021 was barred by the authorities. The firebrand, Holocaust-questioning politician's return comes at a time of heightened tensions between Iran and the West over Tehran's rapidly advancing nuclear programme, its arming of Russia in its war on Ukraine, and its wide-reaching crackdowns on dissent.

Why was Iran's Islamist ex-deputy defence minister given UK citizenship in the late 2000s?

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 18, 2023
The Iranian regime declared on Saturday that it had executed Akbari by hanging. He was 61. He seems that he's been secretly detained in detention since 2019. The crime for which he paid with his life? Espionage is a form of spyship. According to Iran, Akbari, who helped develop the country's repressive regime, spent the past ten years as a'spy' for the UK. It's a strange assertion. Hence, Akbari, a dual national with a British passport who becomes the first person to face the death penalty since the 1980s, has sparked a significant diplomatic controversy that is also in danger of boiling over.

After officials announced that the unit had been 'doutput', Iran denied scrapping its morale police.'

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 5, 2022
According to the ISNA news department, Iran's attorney general Mohammad Jafar Montazeri said on Saturday that the "Morality police have nothing to do with the judiciary" and have been 'abolished from the same place where it was initiated.' The legislature and judiciary were also reviewing Iran's mandatory hijab law, according to he. Since a detainee, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini (pictured inset), died in its custody in mid-September, it was interpreted as meaning the morality police, which enforces veiling rules in the strict Muslim world, was shut down, when it came under intense scrutiny. However, Iranian state media cited news from abroad, reporting that Montazeri's remarks had been misinterpreted incorrectly, and that the morality police is still in existence. According to other reports, the unit had been mostly inactive since the unrest broke out following Amini's death (pictured right, September 21).

In a rare sign that the Islamic theocracy is making concessions due to the protesters, the attorney general said the Iranian parliament is considering removing legislation that makes wearing a Hijab compulsory. How Can Channel 4's dying presenter so callously? JAN MOIR: Why?

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 24, 2022
JAN MOIR: Everyone is so very compassionate and caring, aren't they? They aren't so concerned any more until their public image becomes a personal sacrifice. Take a look at the ridiculous English football team, whose captain promised to wear a OneLove rainbow armband in Qatar against intolerance of homosexuality in Qatar, but the idea was dropped when Fifa threatened to discipline him and several other European team captains for doing so. The armbands came off quicker than a Pigalle stripper's bloomers, knowing they would be on a yellow card for showing their love for the persecuted LGBTQ group. Rather, the England squad took the knee, a hollow gesture that does nothing while respecting no one but themselves.
