David was the elder brother of American lyricist and songwriter Hal David.

Life and career
David was born in New York City on July 5, 1912 to a Jewish family. David intended to become an advocate and attended Cornell University and St. John's University Law School. Despite these initial ambitions, David started writing songs for Tin Pan Alley in New York in the mid-1940s. These initial successes led David to work in film and television production in Hollywood, California. David received eight Academy Award nominations for his film "Bibbidi-Boo," written by Al Hoffman and Jerry Livingston for Walt Disney's Cinderella (1951), as well as "My Wishing Doll" from Hawaii (1966). In 1975, David was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. "Sunflower," David's "most remunescent" song, was released in 1948, and Frank Sinatra turned it into a hit, bringing it into the world. Hello, Dolly!, Jerry Herman's hit theme song, which was released over a decade ago, featured four bars of David's "Sunflower." Herman pleaded no fault for copyright offense before joining "Hello, Dolly" and claiming he had never heard David's "Sunflower" before being sued by David.
