Lynden Pindling Life

Sir Lynden Oscar Pindling (22 March 1930 – 26 August 2000) is regarded as the country's "Father of the Country," having led it to majority rule on 10 January 1967 and independence on July 10, 1973.

He served as the first black premier of the Bahamas from 1967 to 1969, as Prime Minister of the Bahamas from 1969 to 1992.

He served as the head of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), from 1956 to 1997, when he resigned from public life amid the scandal. Pindling won an unbroken series of general elections until 1992, when the PLP lost to the Free National Movement (FNM) led by Hubert Alexander Ingraham.

"The people of this vast little democracy have spoke in a most dignified and eloquent way (and) the voice of the people is God," he conceded defeat. Pindling was a member of Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council, and he was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1982.

Early life and family

Pindling was born in Arnold and Viola Pindling's house in Mason's Addition, Bahamas, on March 22, 1930. Pindling's father was a native of Jamaica who had earlier migrated to The Bahamas to join the Royal Bahamas Police Force as a constable. His father was a shopkeeper, occasional fisherman, and a businessman. Viola Pindling's mother, Viola Pindling, was not from New Providence, but she hails from Acklins, which she moved as a child. Sir Lynden Pindling was the only child of the family.

Pindling, a young boy, was a member of the small grocery store in East Street, New Providence, which was attached to their large grocery store. He became the chief delivery boy by using his bike's handlebars to make drop-offs in neighboring areas. Sidney Poitier, the late Bahamian actor, award winner, film producer, and diplomat, had been linked to this post earlier this year.

Education

Pindling's parents wanted the best education that they could afford to him. Pindling changed colleges often in his earlier years, which led to him moving schools regularly. He began first at Eastern Primary School and then relocated on School Lane, between Shirley and Dowdeswell Streets. At his mother's request, he spent some time at a Seventh-day Adventist Primary school.

Pindling attended all three of the government's junior schools between the ages of seven and nine. He was in each case for about a year. They were on Bay Street, Southern Junior, and Western Junior on Wulff Road and Western Junior on the corner of Meeting Street and Hospital Lane.

He also got his BTE(Been to England)

He attended Western Senior School from 1940 to 1943. While there, the head teacher was Timothy Gibson, whose Pindling later took piano lessons from. Pindling has participated in sports such as track and field and softball.

Pindling and hundreds of children from around the Bahamas all took exams for enrolment in the then-prestigious Government High School in the summer of 1943. (GHS). He was one of the twenty-first winners to win a prize. In '46, he graduated from GHS.'

Pindling continued to study at King's College, University of London (1948-52), where he obtained a law degree. On October 12, 1948, he was admitted to the Middle Temple and was recalled to the Bar on February 10, 1953.

Personal life

Pindling and Dame Marguerite Pindling were married from 1956 to Pindling's death in 2000. They had four children together.

Political career

Pindling was a legal advisor for the newly formed Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) by the end of 1953. When PLP Chairman and de facto leader Henry Taylor (later Sir Henry Taylor) was defeated in the 1956 general election, he became Parliamentary Leader. Pindling was elected party leader Randol Fawkes after he later became Sir Randol Fawkes, a dynamic and influential labour leader.

Pindling married Marguerite McKenzie, of Long Bay Cays, Andros, on Friday in Nassau's St Ann's Parish, on Fox Hill Road. He successfully challenged Nassau's Southern District constituency in the 1956 General Election the following month. In 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1992, and 1997, he would win consecutive elections to the House of Assembly.

Pindling made a speech in the House of Assembly on April 27, 1965, a day in Bahamian history as "Black Tuesday." Pindling brought the Speaker's Mace down and throwing it out of a window into a street in a dramatic turn of events.

He was elected prime minister in 1967 on a platform that included opposition to gambling, corruption, and the Bay Street Boys' mob links. The PLP and the ruling United Bahamian Party, led by Sir Roland Symonette, each won 18 seats in the Assembly on January 10, 1967. Randol Fawkes (the lone Labour MP) voted to join the PLP, and Sir Alvin Braynen, an independent MP, agreed to serve as Speaker, allowing Pindling to establish the first black government in Bahami history.

In the midst of controversies, Pindling went on to lead Bahamians to independence from the United Kingdom on July 10, 1973. Among other items, he introduced social security in the form of the National Insurance Scheme and the establishment of the College of The Bahamas, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, and many others.

Pindling's additional portfolio of finances spanned 1984 to 1990.
