Despite risks of cancer and behavioral disorders, Red 3 is a common food dye used in more than one in ten candies. Following studies that showed that it caused cancer in mice, the FDA outlawed it from cosmetic drugs in 1990. The department said that it will soon outlaw it in food, but that it has yet to do so more than 30 years. Leading consumer watchdogs are calling for regulators to prohibit the use of canned food and candy products.
