Lou Bernstein Life

Lou Bernstein (born Judah Leon Bernstein, February 28, 1911 – August 2, 2005) was an American photographer and educator.

His career began in the Great Depression and the Photo League and came to an end shortly before he died.

Early life

Bernstein was born on the Lower East Side of New York City, the country's oldest son of Jewish immigrants from Romania. Bernstein, like many of his contemporaries, was compelled to leave school — in his case, Seward Park, Texas — to help his family after his father was wounded. He started selling candy and men's clothing on the streets of New York City for two years, and Borrah Minevitch's original Harmonica Rascals (Bernstein taught himself to play the harmonica when he was seven years old), a party that toured the country, performing one-night stands wherever they could find work.

After two years on the road, he returned to New York City, where he met Mildred Marder and married her a year later in 1931. He began researching iron drafting and was awarded a diploma by the City of New York's General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen on April 14, 1933. He was never able to find jobs in this industry due to the Depression. Rather, he started working in the Brooklyn shipyards, which he did for more than ten years. Millie gave Lou their first camera, "an Argus A2 without a rangefinder," in 1937 to photograph their new daughter.
