Liam Buckley Career

Playing career

Buckley began his League of Ireland with Shelbourne and signed with Shamrock Rovers as a full-time player in the 1979 close season. On October 21, 1979, he scored his first goal for the Hoops against his old Milltown club, but he went on to score another seven league goals this season.

Diego Maradona scored in a 1–0 loss at the River Plate Stadium on April 30, 1980, where he represented Ireland against Argentina.

In 1981, Buckley played for the Republic of Ireland's national under-21 football team.

He finished as Rovers' top scorer with 21 goals and had a trial at Hannover 96 after a brief stint with Vancouver Whitecaps in the 1981-82 season. Though the following season was a disappointment, he continued to be Milltown's top goalcorer and guested for St Patrick's Athletic in a friendly with Manchester United.

He competed for the League of Ireland U21s in April 1983 against their Italian League peers, including Roberto Mancini and Gianluca Vialli in their squad.

Rovers won their first League title in twenty years in 1983–84, winning their first league title in 20 years. Before breaking his collarbone against Waterford at Milltown on February 26, Buckley had scored 13 League goals before breaking his collarbone. In the FAI Cup semi-final replay against Shelbourne, he returned to action less than six weeks later, scoring the winner.

He made five appearances in Hoops' European competition.

Buckley was capped at full international level against Poland in July and then re-signed to Belgian club K.S.V. Waregem (4451) compelled the waregem. He earned his second international cap against Mexico while on duty in the United States. Waregem was one of the 1985-86 UEFA Cup semifinalists. He made 25 appearances in the league, scoring five goals.

He was on loan at Racing de Santander from 1986–87 and made his debut at the Camp Nou on August 30. It's a game he fondly remembers: "Gary Lineker and Mark Hughes made their debut for FC Barcelona, and I was making my debut for Santander. Although the crowd of around ninety thousand was largely positive, I think this performance was the highlight of my career." He then moved to FC Montreux-Sports (November 1987–89), where he spent two seasons.

He came home and signed for Rovers again in 1989, but injuries prevented him from establishing a regular first team squad roster position. He scored once in eleven appearances in his last season in the Hoops from 1991 to 1992.

He then moved to St. Patrick's Athletic, where he went on to win the league as an assistant coach in 1996. Brian Kerr, the former manager of Richmond Park, was fired in December 1996 to take up the position of technical director at the Football Association of Ireland. Buckley was not given the Pats' job as a manager and he departed the club in February 1997 to Sligo for the remainder of the season and then went on to become Athlone Town's player-manager.

Management career

In 1998, Buckley guided Athlone to the FAI Cup semi-finals in his first season as player-manager.

Pat Dolan, who helped St. Pat's win the league in 1998, resigned after one game of the 1998/99 season and named Buckley as manager. The Pats retained their league title, but Buckley was fired in December 1999 after two poor losses in Europe and indifferent domestic form.

He served as Athlone's boss before being appointed Shamrock Rovers boss in April 2002.

He led Rovers to the FAI Cup Final and 3rd position in his first season, thus guaranteeing European football for the first time following the UEFA Cup's humiliation to Djurg'rdens IF.

Rovers became the first Irish team to win home and away after he had played and scored against Fram Reykjavik in 1982.

Rovers' form plummeted after the UEFA Intertoto Cup games, despite the fact that a seventh-place finish had the fans concerned. Buckley was fired in September 2004 after almost a new team Rovers struggled in the 2004 season, and the sacrament Buckley was sacked in September 2004.

Buckley took over as the head of Sporting Fingal, a brand-new team that was granted a license to play in the League of Ireland First Division in 2008. In their first season in senior football, they finished a respectable 3rd. Buckley led Fingal to promotion in the play-offs, and the FAI Cup was capped off by a superb season.

He was named SWAI Personality of the Year in January 2010.

Buckley was named St.Patrick's Athletic coach for the 2012 season on December 2nd, 2011. In his first season with the Saints, he led the club to third place in the League of Ireland, with his team playing some of the best football the club has seen since his time in the league (only six points off 1st place).

Liam Buckley resigned from St.Patrick's Athletic in September after losing 3-1 to Bohemians.

In October 2018, Sligo Rovers' chief was hired. Buckley left the club by mutual consent on May 22nd, 2022, after winning European football training in back to back seasons during his final two years with the club. He was involved in 118 games with the club in all.
