Personal life
Mwanawasa married Mauen Mwanawasa on September 3, 1988, and the couple stayed married until his death. Miriam, Patrick, Lorna, Chipokota Mwanawasa, Matolo, Lubona, and Ntembe were among his seven children. Miriam and Patrick were from his first marriage. His wife was a baptized member of the Jehovah's Witnesses, but she has since been disfellowshiped due to her active participation in politics. It is against Jehovah's Witnesses' faith that they are to participate or not participate in politics.
Mwanawasa was baptized by Rev. David Mwanawasa on February 27, 2005. Rodney Masona, the pastor of Twin Palm Baptist Church in Lusaka, is the author of the book.
In September 2007, Mwanawasa travelled to Arkansas to speak at Harding University in Searcy, where she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the college. When in Arkansas, he met with students and reporters at the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service on social, economic, and political growth in Zambia and the region, with special attention paid to HIV/AIDS in Africa and Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe.
Early life and legal career
Mwanawasa was born in Mufulira, Northern Rhodesia, as the second of ten children. He obtained his law degree from the University of Zambia. From 1974 to 1978, he worked in private law firms until he established his own business, Mwanawasa & Company. Mwanawasa served as Solicitor General in the Zambian government in 1985, but in 1986, he returned to private practice.
He commanded the legal defense team for Lt. Gen. Tembo, who had been accused of plotting to overthrown the government by the Kenneth Kaunda government, which was considered a crime worthy of the death penalty, and Mwanawasa's fame among the anti-Kaunda opposition soared. Mwanawasa was named vice president after Frederick Chiluba was elected president in November 1991. In March 1992, Mwanawasa's business was sold.
