Leonard Borwick Life

Leonard Borwick (26 February 1868 – September 25, 1925) was an English concert pianist who was particularly associated with Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms' music.

Early training and debuts

Leonard Borwick, the grandson of a Staffordshire family, studied piano under Henry R. Bird, violin, and viola under Alfred Gibson until the age of 16. He then went to study piano under Clara Schumann at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt, Germany, as well as composition under Bernhard Scholz and Iwan Knorr, as well as violin and viola under Fritz Basserman. Borwick had visited Baritone Harry Plunket Greene while on leave from Clara Schumann's academy in London one evening during the late 1880s. Greene and Borwick's brother were attending Clifton College, and their friendship developed between them. In November 1889, he made his debut at the Museum in Frankfurt, Germany's "Emperor" concerto, and in the same month in Strasbourg under Franz Stockhausen's direction (a student of Alkan), he and Liszt (the Paganini Études).
