Lenore Ulric (born Lenore Ulrich, 1892 – December 30, 1970) was a Broadway stage and Hollywood film of the silent-film and early sound period. In 1913, theatre director David Belasco, who would continue to direct her stage career, was praised for portraying fiery, hot-blooded women of the common vamp.
Early life, theater, and silent films
Lenore Ulrich was born on July 21, 1892 to Franz Xavier Ulrich, a United States Army hospital steward, and Ida Ulrich (née Engenhart). Both of her parents were first-generation German-Americans. According to reports, Franz named his daughter Lenore after his fondness for Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven." The "h" was eventually stripped from her surname. Isabel, Francis, Alma, and Florence had four sisters, as well as a brother, Roy Richard. After finishing 3rd grade, she dropped out of school.
Lenore, a young girl, started working with a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, stock brokerage firm. She worked with stock firms in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Chicago, Illinois. She worked briefly as a film actress for Essanay Studios before joining another stock company in Schenectady, New York. She worked in The First Man (1911), A Polish Burglar (1911), Kilmeny (1915), and The Better Woman (1915).
She specialized in playing sultry, ardent women. She began to work for Pallas Pictures in 1915, including Frozen Justice and The Intrigue, which are also on display at the Library of Congress today.
