ALEXANDRA SHULMAN: Do film fans really need a return of the Devil?

ALEXANDRA SHULMAN: The question I'm asked most often about my time editing Vogue is not what it was like to be in charge of such a prestigious magazine but was it really like the film The Devil Wears Prada?
Much to everyone's disappointment, my answer is always 'No, of course not' - but the movie did nail certain aspects of the general high-octane feel of working at Vogue, the passion for fashion and the competitive nature among the team. The original book was written by Lauren Weisberger, who had worked as Anna Wintour 's assistant at American Vogue, and who did a fabulous job at turning her boss into a figure of worldwide fame. Now there's a sequel in the works, which is most unlikely to have anything like the same degree of success. How could it, since it won't be rooted in the reality - or exaggerated reality - of the author's experience at the magazine? Part of what made the original movie so popular was the idea that some people really lived this life.

Critics snared the musical, with the kindest reports advising that it needs some 'tailoring' to prepare for Broadway and the harshest calling it irredeemable. In the New York Post, Johnny Oleksinski wrote, "Every song is lousy, and there is nothing here that is worth fixing." The show pulled out all of the stops in its production, including rocker and hit-tested Broadway writer Elton John to handle the score, and Tony award winner Beth Leavel to play Runway magazine editor Miranda Priestly. Despite being renowned for its fame and glamorous subject, the musical managed to do something but shine on Sunday evening.
