Tesco arms delivery drivers with DNA 'spit kits' to help trace abusive customers amid rise in violence

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 20, 2024
The British supermarket has offered its staff so-called 'spit kits' in an effort to combat the shocking increase in violent attacks on retail workers. If a customer becomes aggressive and spits, the violated staff member can use the DNA kit to collect a sample. They are then urged to contact the Tesco security team as well as the police. The kits now come as standard in delivery vans and were first issued a number of years ago. Tesco offers the 'spit kits' to any colleague who wishes to use them. The drastic measure comes as the number of daily incidents of abuse against retail workers surged by 50 per cent from 870 to 1,300 in 2023, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC).
