Early years
Tomlinson was born in Savanna-la-Mar, Jamaica, and moved to Chicago, Illinois, in March 2003. He grew up in Rogers Park and attended Lane Technical College Prep High School, where he was a two-sport star in both football and track. Both the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association and Chicago Tribune selected him as a senior for all-state. As a senior, he was named team MVP. He was a two-time All-city pick. He was also a four-time first-team All-conference pick. He coached his high school football team to the 2008 Chicago Public League football championship.
In addition, Tomlinson was drafted in track & Field at Lane. He came in first in the discus (140-06 or 42.9 meters) and second in the shot put at the 2009 Chicago Public League T&F Championship. He set personal records of 43.01 meters (141-1) in the discus throw and 14.58 meters (47-7) in the shot put to rank 17th and 22nd in the preliminary heats.
College career
Tomlinson attended Duke University from 2010 to 2014. He played for the first time in his freshman season and played 52 games during his collegiate career. Walter Camp Football Foundation named him an All-American as a senior (WCFF). He was named the best ACC Athlete of the Year in 2015 by winning the Anthony J. McKevlin Award.
Professional career
In the 2015 NFL Draft, Tomlinson was drafted in the first round with the 28th overall pick by the Detroit Lions. In 1987, he became the first Duke player to be selected in the first round of an NFL Draft since Mike Junkin.
Tomlinson was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2019 fifth-round draft pick on August 31, 2017. Tomlinson played left guard for the next 15 games in 2017.
The 49ers turned down Tomlinson's five-year deal, making him a free agent in 2019. However, Tomlinson agreed to a three-year, $18 million contract extension with the 49ers on June 22, 2018.
Tomlinson signed a three-year deal with the New York Jets on March 17, 2022.
