Laisenia Qarase (pronounced [arase]; 4 February 1941-to-date) was a Fijian politician who lived in Fiji. He served as Fiji's sixth Prime Minister from 2000 to 2006. Qarase served with the Interim Military Government as a financial advisor after the military quashed the coup that resulted in Mahendra Chaudhry's ouster, and until his appointment as Prime Minister on July 4th. He gained two parliamentary elections, but he was ousted from office on December 5, 2006. He was later arrested on corruption charges brought by the military-backed regime.
He was one of many Lauans to have held top leadership positions in Fiji, being a native of Vanua Balavu Island, the Lau archipelago.
Early and personal life
Qarase was born in 1941 into the Tota clan in Mavana, the son of Josateki Mate of Mavana village. He began attending local schools and attended Suva Boys Grammar School. Qarase left Fiji in 1959 and went on to graduate from University of Auckland with a degree in Commerce following his years at Suva Boys Grammar School. He started working at the Fijian Affairs Board and spent his time as a career civil servant in the ministries of Finance, Commerce, and Public Service. He joined the banking industry and became the first ethnic Fijian managing director of the publicly owned Fiji Development Bank (FDB) in 1983, a position he held for fifteen years. After the 1987 coup, he was called by the new government to help the country restore the country's tarnished economy. He introduced the nine-point program, which included expanded government assistance to Fijians and the establishment of Fijian Holdings. However, the scheme mainly resulted in bankruptcies, and he was embroiled in a controversy in Fijian Holdings over his family's purchase of shares. He became chairman of Fiji Television in 1994 and was chastised by the government for not informing him on the company's efforts to attract US investment.
