Kyle Eugene Petty (born June 2, 1960) is an American former stock car racer and current racing analyst.

Richard Petty, grandson of racer Lee Petty, and father of racer Adam Petty, who was killed in a crash in May 2000, was the son of racer Richard Petty.

Early career

Petty was born in Randleman, North Carolina. He made his big-league stock car debut at the age of 18. In 1979, Petty won the 1979 Daytona ARCA 200, one of his dad's old 1978 Dodge Magnum race cars; at the time, he was the youngest driver to win a major-league stock car race. He made his Winston Cup Series debut later this year, while others on a passed down STP Dodge Magnum numbered No. 88. He used 42 (a number used by his grandfather Lee Petty) for his family's team. In his first series event, the 1979 Talladega 500, he ran five races and finished in ninth place. He made fifteen appearances in the No. 1 in 1980. 42 (after crashed the last of his father's Dodge Magnums in one of the Daytona 125 qualifying races) and saw six top-ten finishes, with one winning a twenty-place points finish. He began his father's No. 8 in 1981, driving his father's No. 1. 43 years for one race before tackling full time in his regular No. 2. 42, finishing in the top ten times and finishing twelfth in points.

He started the 1982 season with two top-ten finishes, but then split time between his No. and his No. The No. 42 is the most popular in the world. Hoss Ellington's 1 UNO/STP vehicle ended the season in points at fifteenth place.

He inherited funds from 7-Eleven in 1983 and then boosted his number to 7. He had only two top-ten finishes, but he climbed to 13th place in the standings. He began the season off with six top-tens the following year, but dropped three positions in points.
