ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit says college football players now have TOO MUCH power in the new NIL era
www.dailymail.co.uk,
September 29, 2024
ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit is calling for a level playing field amid college sports' new name, image and license (NIL) era. 'We're all for the players getting paid, but we're not all for the players having all the control,' Herbstreit told the College GameDay audience while broadcasting from Tuscaloosa, where Alabama was set to his Georgia. 'I think we went from one extreme where the players didn't have a lot of control to now the players having all the control.' Herbstreit's comments came after a week in which UNLV quarterback Matthew Sluka made headlines by abruptly ending his season. His agent explained that Sluka decided to redshirt after not being paid $100,000 for an NIL deal that was promised by an assistant coach when the QB agreed to transfer to the Rebels last winter.

'That was an amazing situation... [Hill] pulled out of the car, is able to play... I don't know whether adrenaline kicks in or what... he had a great day,' Michaels said, referencing his 130-yard performance afterwards.

Emmy Award: Show to allow show to bypass eligibility laws and give coveted statuettes to College GameDay hosts
www.dailymail.co.uk,
January 11, 2024
Has ESPN been padding its stats? Following an in-depth probe by The Athletic, the cable sports behemoth confessed to submitting fake names to the Emmy Award host in an attempt to win more statuettes for on-air talent. The scheme went unnoticed until last year, when it was announced by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), which sponsors the Emmy Awards. Many on-air hosts have since been asked by ESPN to return their awards. According to The Athletic, however, there is no evidence that the on-air employees in question were aware of the scheme. In total, the scheme resulted in at least 30 statuettes being delivered to on-air hosts, who were actually ineligible to receive them. The precise mastermind remains a mystery, but the project's motivations appear to be an attempt to defy NATAS rules, which, until 2023, have barred on-air hosts from being included in the credit list for the 'outstanding weekly studio show' award. Hosts have always been eligible for individual awards, but NATAS denied them the opportunity to win a trophy for a complete show, avoiding what was described as double dipping: being honoured twice for the same work.

The football teams in Georgia and Ohio State have been around for at least 130 years. The two colleges have put on display college football's spotlight since the mid-20th century, not to mention 11 total national championships. So it shouldn't surprise that the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta on Saturday was only the second meeting between the two storied organizations ever held. To name a few, the Bulldogs defeated the Buckeyes 21-14 in the 1993 Citrus Bowl, featuring a bewildering lineup of NFL stars, including Garrison Hearst, Eddie George, Joey Galloway, Robert Smith, and Terrell Davis. Kirk Herbstreit, a quarterback for the Buckeyes who later became one of college football's most popular announcers, was one of those who didn't go to become a NFL quarterback. In fact, he'll be in the ESPN booth on Saturday, when the Big Ten and SEC will reopen the long discussion over the country's best college football conference.
