Kimberly Duane Mulkey (born May 17, 1962) is the Baylor University head women's basketball coach.
She is the first female basketball player to win a national championship as a player, assistant coach, and head coach.
She is also the third NCAA women's basketball coach to win three national championships.
Personal life
Randy Robertson, who had attended Louisiana Tech and served as the Bulldogs' starting quarterback for the 1974 and 1975 seasons, married Mulkey in 1987. The couple have two children together, including son Kramer, a professional baseball player and NCAA All-American at Louisiana State University, and daughter Makenzie, who competed both basketball and softball for Baylor and is now an assistant coach on her mother's staff. Kim Mulkey-Robertson was a common name during her marriage to Robertson. Mulkey and Robertson divorced in 2006.
She spent her childhood in Tickfaw, Louisiana.
Coaching career
Mulkey took over a Baylor program that had struggled through the 1999–2000 season 7–20 and last in the Big 12 Conference, and had never been invited to the NCAA tournament. She led the Lady Bears to their first NCAA tournament appearance in her first season at Baylor; the Lady Bears have gone back to postseason play every year since Mulkey's arrival. They have won more than 20 games this year, and only once have the team lost more than 10 games in a season. The Baylor program under Mulkey was capped off in 2005 with a national championship after the Bears defeated Michigan State in the championship game in Indianapolis. This made her the first woman to win NCAA Division I basketball titles as both a player and a head coach, and she was only the fourth person to do so (after Joe B. ). (Bob Knight and Dean Smith, Hall).
Mulkey has been involved in the NCAA women's tournament since the start of the 1982-1985 season, whether as a player or coach. In 2000, she was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame for her contributions as a player.
Mulkey, the baylor's coach, had signed a 10-year contract to remain the head coach. Won't Back Down: Teams, Dreams, and Families is her autobiography.
Mulkey made NCAA history by guiding the Lady Bears to a perfect 40-0 season in 2012, the most honors in college basketball, both men and women. The Lady Bears defeated Notre Dame in a NCAA Championship game in Denver, where the season came to an end.
The Baylor Lady Bears defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish by 81-81 in Tampa, a repeat of the 2012 NCAA Championship game. Mulkey was the third coach to win three or more NCAA Division I women's basketball championships, joining Connecticut's Geno Auriemma (11) and Tennessee's Pat Summitt (8).
Mulkey is well-known for her "bold" sense of style. She wore a snakeskin print to a game against Connecticut once, and her fashion choices have evoked a slew of favorable comments online.
Although the 2020 NCAA tournament was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Baylor made it to the Elite Eight of the 2021 tournament, which was held in an event isolation "bubble." Despite the continuing pandemic, Mulkey recommended that COVID-19 testing on the tournament participants be phased out. Despite not being asked by journalists, she said that the group that was tasked with staging the student tournament should "dump the COVID testing." She went even deeper and said, "Wouldn't it be a shame to continue COVID testing, and then you have kids [testing] positive or not, and they don't get to play in the Final Four?" So you have to forget the COVID assessments and let the four teams that are competing in each Final Four meet it out. Mulkey had been positive for the virus earlier in the season and had made the remarks after her team's loss to UConn; a team that Baylor was supposed to face earlier this season but was canceled due to Mulkey's COVID diagnosis. Her remarks were later described by "many basketball followers" as "misinformed, risky, and irresponsible," according to CBS News. "This year has taught us that there are a number of difficult topics to write about," Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma said later.
Mulkey, Baylor's head coach, had been named LSU's head coach for 21 years. 2021, April 25, 2021.
