Career

Donnelly has appeared in a variety of roles throughout Ireland, as well as directing and writing shows. He appeared in the chorus of The Wireman at Dublin's Gaiety Theatre in 2005. In The Rain and Ethan in The Full Monty, Tony in The Corona Theatre, Aladdin and Collins in Michael Collins' A Musical Drama, both at the Olympia Theatre, and in Mull's The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in Sweeney Todd.

He performed in Les Misérables on the West End as a swing, and as a member of the cast, he appeared in the Les Misérables concert with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra on the Isle of Wight in 2008. In the following season of 2009/10, he was Javert and Enjolras, while at the time he appeared in the lead role of Jean Valjean as an emergency cover multiple times. With the following casting change, he was promoted to principal Enjolras and was publicly announced as third cover Valjean. He finished in Les Misérables on June 18, 2011.

Raoul in Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre was Donnelly's next role. During this period, he appeared on commercials for McDonald's and Jameson Whiskey, and appeared on television programs such as The Tudors, The Open House, The Late Late Show, and Showbands. At the National Concert Hall, he appeared in You Should Be Dancing.

Donnelly appeared in Courfeyrac in the 25th Anniversary Concert of Les Misérables at The O2 Arena in London on October 3, 2010. Combeferre was also cast in the show's film, which was released in 2012.

Donnelly took over Tony in Billy Elliot The Musical at the Victoria Palace Theatre on November 12, 2012.

It was announced on August 20th that Donnelly would play Deco in the West End Musical The Commitments beginning from September 21. In the 2015 Olivier Awards, Donnelly began playing Huey in Memphis from September 9, 2014, for which he was named Best Actor in a Musical.

On Sunday, it was confirmed that Donnelly would appear in the West End production of the musical Kinky Boots at the Adelphi Theatre. On the first preview, which was published on August 21, 2015, it was the first time. At the 2016 Olivier Awards, Donnelly was voted Best Actor in a Musical on February 29, 2016. He left the show on August 13th and returned to Ireland to perform Jackie Day in Donegal, a new Frank McGuinness play.

He appeared in Broadway for the first time on December 6, 2016 in Kinky Boots, recreating Charlie Price's role.

Donnelly returned to Les Misérables' West End production on June 12th to play Jean Valjean, then reprising the role in the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2018.

On the 29th of February 2020, he returned to The Phantom of the Opera, this time playing The Phantom of the Opera. The tour was cancelled just a few weeks into its run at Curve, Leicester, putting an end to Donnelly's stint as The Phantom on tour due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.

When it reopens in June 2021, it was announced that Donnelly will reprise the role of The Phantom in the West End production of The Phantom of the Opera.
