As the Princess Royal, she and her brother, Camilla, William and Kate, and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are all key players in promoting the monarchy. Princess Anne's no nonsense approach to work and life in general seems to be universally lauded. It's easy to forget that she was once regarded as something of a royal wild child - who embarrassed her parents with blue language and speeding fines!

The Queen became a mother at the age of 22, but it was her extended presence among her ances that distinguished her as a true matriarch. Anne was born mother to Charles only a year after her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born and welcomed her daughter Anne two years later. Despite rumors of a previous cooling between mother and son, ties slowed in recent years, with the Queen increasingly focusing on family in her speeches.

The Queen has arranged a tribute to her daughter Princess Anne, who is celebrating her 72nd birthday today. Her Majesty, 96, posted a note on Instagram Stories (pictured). The message included a snapshot of Anne taken earlier this year when she hosted The Not Forgotten Association Garden Party in May. It was accompanied by a simple caption saying: 'Wishing the Princess Royal a happy birthday today!' Her Majesty was not the only royal to wish Princess Anne in honor of her birthday.
