Thousands of London Marathon runners honoured the memory of the late reigning men's champion Kelvin Kiptum ahead of Sunday's race. Kenyan runner Kiptum was 24 when he died alongside his Rwandan coach Gervais Hakizimana, 37, in a road accident in his homeland on February 11. Kiptum ran the second-fastest marathon in history in London last year, setting a time of 2:01:25, just 16 seconds outside the world record.

The London Marathon is getting off with a touching tribute to the Queen as 40,000 runners took the streets in honor of the Queen

Before the grueling 26.2-mile course through London, there was a moving interpretation of the national anthem at the start line in Greenwich Park this morning. Smiles and groans would be common on the faces of those who participated today, as thousands of thousands of spectators gathered to demonstrate their love. Many of those taking part in the big event will be fundraising, with some of them having devoted personal accounts to explain why they are putting their bodies through the wringer. As visitors make their way through the crowds, they will also see the city's historic landmarks, including Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, the London Eye, Westminster, and, of course, Buckingham Palace on the home straight. Also legendary are the now-famous fancy dress costumes that some runners will sport, with gigantic sunflowers, Minions, and even Big Ben's Elizabeth Tower all set to draw attention as they travel around the course.

Kenenisa Bekele, who is heading to London, claims to be the best long distance runner ever

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 30, 2022
To be precise, Kenenisa Bekele's opinion of himself, there is no room for discussion at all. His emulation comes with some justification, considering that the Ethiopian has three Olympic gold medals, 17 world titles spanning cross-country, track, and road, as well as world records for 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters for 15 and 16 years respectively. He is also the No. 2 on the all-time marathon list. Bekele is of the opinion that his accomplishments over a wider area of distances give him the edge over Eliud Kipchoge.
