Early life and education
May was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Janet May and Joseph May, both teachers. She was the youngest of four children, with two sisters and a brother. May's upbringing was described as "very traditional working-American" by her mother, with a "strong emphasis on education in my house, mainly the arts and history." She grew up in suburban Pleasant Hills, Pennsylvania, and attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Jefferson Hills, where she was a cheerleader.
May attended Ohio University from 1999 to 2003, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in retail merchandising.

May was a single mother. "I had the most important person in my life, my daughter, to make proud every day and remind me what she was working toward."
