Early life
Olivo was born in the South Bronx, New York City, on August 7, 1976. Olivo's father is of Puerto Rican and Native American descent, and their mother is of Dominican and Chinese descent. They were raised in Bartow, Florida. They studied at the Lois Cowles Harrison Center for the Performing Arts in Lakeland, Florida, and later the University of Cincinnati – College-Conservatory of Music. They left school early in their third year to attend Rent's original Broadway revival.
Personal life
Olivo is married to Jim Uphoff, with whom they have two step-children. In September 2014, Olivo and Uphoff, a marketing manager and former New York theater sound technician, married. Olivo's wife, Broadway actress Matt Caplan, was married until 2012.
Olivo and Uphoff married in Madison, Wisconsin, where they and Uphoff share a home they refer to as their "home base" while taking a break from acting. Both Olivo and their husband have family in Madison. Olivo has lived in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Los Angeles.

Career
Olivo began their professional career in 1997 when they joined Rent's original Broadway production. They joined as a replacement swing, while still undermining Mimi and Maureen's roles. As a replacement swing once more, they embarked on Rent's first national tour dubbed the "Angel Tour" in the following year. Olivo joined Mimi on the tour in late 1998 and stayed in the role until leaving the theater in January 1999. They returned to New York City in 1999, but they did not get a single role outside of As the World Turns before joining the regional try-out of the musical Brooklyn in 2003. Olivo appeared in a regional staging of Children of Eden and filmed guest appearances for All My Children and Law & Order before moving to Broadway the following fall. The musical Brooklyn premiere opened in October 2004 and closed in June 2005. Following its closing, Olivo appeared in the cast of the Brazilian-themed off-Broadway musical Miracle Brothers, which closed in October 2005. In the year after, they appeared in NBC's Conviction and the independent film Adrift in Manhattan, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007.

Olivo received a Tony Award in 2009 for their role as Anita in the Broadway revival of West Side Story. They were also nominated for both a Drama Desk and an Outer Critics Circle Award for their critically acclaimed role as Anita. They received their second Astaire Award for their performance in West Side Story, after winning the same award in 2008 for their appearance in In the Heights. They were employees with West Side Story at the Palace from 2010 to 2010. Olivo broke their foot during their West Side Story matinee performance on May 8, 2010. Natalie Cortez, an Anita standby, appeared on the show until it was ended.
Olivo appeared in By the Way, Meet Vera Stark at Off-Broadway's Second Stage Theatre, where he appeared in the world premiere. The play "draws on the screwball films of the 1930s to provide a witty and irreverent glimpse at Hollywood racial stereotypes."
