1997–1999: Early career
Until disbanding, Dir En Grey was preceded by the independent rock band La:Sadie's, which featured four of Dir En Grey's members. They disbanded due to the fact that they were too late to start, but guitarist Kaoru said they were excited for it. Toshiya, a bassist, after parting with Kisaki, members of Kaoru, Kyo, Die, and Shinya, recruited Toshiya and reformed as a new band. They officially formed "Dir en grey" on February 2, 1997 after appearing at one show as a Kuroyume cover-band at the live house Nagano J on January 24, 1997.
The band's name is a combination of German "dir," French "en," and English "grey" and was believed to mean "Grey Silver Coin" (, Haiiro no Ginka); the Japanese translation was used as the name of their fanclub's journal. They wanted to create a black and white version of music, so they went for grey. In an early interview, vocalist Kyo said he knew the name before the band was formed. Kaoru explains that they took the name of another band that was already well-known at the time. This band, Lavigne, had released "Dir en gray" in 1995, and was released on a cassette. The line dir en gray' begins the song, with the Latin portion being a correct translation of the Japanese version. Both imply "to you in grey." Kaoru said in a subsequent interview that "at the time we selected the band name, it had some meaning, but right now, it doesn't mean anything particular." We chose the band name because it sounded right, and it also represented an image that sadly does not exist elsewhere."
Missa debuted a few months later and attracted mainstream attention in 1998 by landing on the Oricon music charts with the still independently produced songs "Jealous" and "Ill-." During the first half of 1999, five subsequent singles, arranged and produced by X Japan co-founder Yoshiki Hayashi, were released. Gauze was the band's first full-length album.
