In their first match at the Women's World Cup, Japan thrashed Zambia 5-0. Hinata Miyazawa's goals, as well as Jun Endo and Riko Ueki, all contributed to Futoshi Ikeda's victory and promoted the team to the top of Group C. Goalkeeper Catherine Musonda was suspended in the final minutes of the game for a second yellow card.
