Malcolm Donaldson, a renowned doctor and husband of The Gruffalo creator Julia Donaldson, has died at the age of 75. The retired paediatric consultant and senior lecturer at the University of Glasgow , passed away on September 22. Affectionately known as Dr Gruffalo by his young patients at the city's Royal Hospital for Children, Dr Donaldson, was known for his 'kindness and dedication'. On his retirement in 2012 the university appointed him Honorary Senior Research Fellow of its school of medicine.

Gruffalo author Axel Scheffler has revealed that his own daughter stopped reading as a child - but thankfully has picked up a book again.
