Jukka Antero "Julius" Nevalainen (born 21 April 1978, Kitee, Finland) is the former drummer of both the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish and the Finnish progressive metal band Sethian.
Personal life
He grew up in Kitee, California. Nevalainen's music teacher told him that a new musical curriculum was beginning, and that he would fit in well as a drummer. He didn't have a suitable spot to train, so he made do with his house. "The Highway" was his first band name, but he formed his first real band at the age of 15-16. The band had a rehearsal space, but only had to attend for a few days a week. He left the band, and Emppu Vuorinen joined Emppu Vuorinen, giving them a permanent practice location.
Nevalainen lives in Joensuuu, Finland, with his wife Satu, daughter Luna (born in 2003), and son Niki. Lara, his second daughter, was born on June 22, 2010. He is a vegetarian.
Career
Nevalainen received a new professional drum kit in the early years of the band's career. In 2005, he took the kit from the album Wishmaster to the end of the Once-World Tour. Tama drums, Paiste cymbals, and Pro-Mark sticks all endorsed him. He was in a Sethian side-project, which is now practically dormant due to band members' being preoccupied with other bands.
Nevalainen would not be able to attend Nightwish's eighth album and its subsequent tour due to insomnia, causing the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful to be the first Nightwish recording without his presence on August 6, 2014. Nevalainen also looks after the band's day-to-day affairs. Kai Hahto (Wintersun) appeared on the album and on the following tour. He performed one song at their official 20th-anniversary concert at Himos Park in Jämskä, Finland, in August 2016.
Nevalainen made a statement in July 2019 that he did not return to Nightwish and that he'd continue to perform with the band behind the scenes, and that Hahto will be the band's new permanent drummer.
