Scott Huver, who began his career reporting for a Beverly Hills newspaper then spent more than 20 years as a celebrity journalist, explains what he believes is the enduring appeal of the case. 'In part, it helped kick off a frenzied cycle of celebrity crime obsession that flourished in the 1990s and early 2000s - the Beverly Hills-adjacent OJ Simpson trial being the jewel in the Court TV crown,' he says. 'But theirs is far from the most monstrous crime to come out of the 90210 zip code.' Now, in his book Beverly Hills Noir : Crime, Sin & Scandal in 90210, he reveals there's plenty more monstrous material for the streaming services, when the frenzy over the Menendez siblings finally dies down.

Lyle and Erik Menéndez famously murdered their parents in 1989 and were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The American brothers were trialled once separately, and a second time together, and were finally convicted in 1996. Lyle and Erik, now 56 and 53, claimed their father sexually abused them and threatened to kill them if they spoke out - so they killed him in pre-emptive self defense. However, doubt was cast over the brothers' claims when it was revealed their father José and their mother Mary had a multimillion-dollar estate. During the lengthy trials, one of the witnesses claimed that Lyle and Erik were inspired to commit the double parricide by a 1987 film.
