Jose Rodrigues Life

José Rodrigues de Carvalho, born in Lisbon on July 16, 1828 (October 19, 1887 in Lisbon) was a Portuguese painter. O Pobre Rabequista (The poor rabequista), painted in 1855 and considered Rodriques' most important work, was first shown in Paris at the Universal Exhibition in 1855 and at the International Exposition of Porto in 1865, where he received his second prize.

Early life

José Rodrigues was the son of Apolinário José de Carvalho and Maria Leonarda. On September 21, 1828, he was baptized in So Joo da Praça, Lisbon, Portugal. José Rodrigues, his godfather, was also José Rodrigues.

Rodrigues had five brothers and spent at "Rua dos Bacalhoeiros" in Lisbon. José Maria Rodrigues da Rocha, José Maria Rodrigues da Rocha's niece, was born in 1863 and had three children named António Ribeiro, Teresa de Jesus, and Leonor Matilde.

He left an engraving dating 1840 before starting the Academy of Fine Arts at San Francisco Convent as a volunteer student in 1841. In 1842, he received a prize in a drawing competition. The award was a bas-relief copy. An engraving by José Rodrigues, signed and dated, can be found from that time.

He exhibited a drawing in bas-relief in 1843 during an exhibition of student works. The following people were nominated for an award in that year: Miguel ngelo Lupi, Angelino da Cruz Castro e Silva, António Lopes Jnior, and Ernesto Gerard.

He began studying historical painting in 1845/1846 and received an award. He was given another award in December 1846 for a life-model drawing.
