Baseball's work force has been split into pitchers and position players for the better part of the last 150 years. Or, at least that was the case until 2018, when Shohei Ohtani first arrived from Japan and went on to establish himself as both a professional hurler and a hitter. Now, with the seasons free agency looming, the right-handed ace and left-handed slugger is having a memorable season on the mound and on the plate. Not only does he lead the majors with X home runs, but he ranks first in several advanced metrics, such as Wins Above Replacement (WAR), for both hitters and pitchers. But although his spectacular play has failed to benefit the tumultuous Los Angeles Angels, it has put him in contention for one of the most lucrative contracts in sports this winter. Ohtani's rivals, such as Kansas City's Salvador Perez and Toronto's Jordan Romano, believed he'd be worth $600 million on the open market, placing him in Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's exclusive neighborhood.
