On November 1, Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving slammed New York City Mayor Eric Adams' decision to lift the private-sector vaccination law while still allowing his own mandate for local government employees to continue. 'If I can work and be unvaccinated, then all of my brothers and sisters who are also unvaccinated should be able to do the same, without being discriminated against, mocked, or fired,' Irving tweeted. 'This enforced Vaccine/Pandemic Act is one of the biggest human rights abuses in history.' Irving was out early for much of last season as a result of the city's local private-sector law and the Nets' decision to not use him for away games, citing their preference for full-time players. In January, team officials relented, allowing him to attend road games, and the city followed suit in February by lifting the indoor ban, allowing him to play at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

According to a recent healthy and safety policy released Tuesday, the NBA continues to raise COVID-era restrictions for players, but those who are unvaccinated will still be required to perform weekly testing. Although all symptomatic players must be tested, unvaccinated players will also be subjected to once-week surveillance testing, except on days off or if recently recovered,' according to the new guidelines. Facemasks, on the other hand, are no longer needed. The NBA has never mandated vaccinations for players, but did defer to local health laws, resulting in unvaccinated Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving being suspended for severing portions of last season. On the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the league did reduce isolation periods over the course of the 2021-22 season.
