Early life and education
Banks were born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Chillum Heights, Maryland. Elena Adams Banks, a single mother, was raised in many federal government departments, including the CIA. In addition, she served as a private secretary to several top Naval officers, including Admiral Chester Nimitz.
Banks graduated from Northwood High School in Silver Spring and Bloomington, Indiana, where he was a classmate of actor Kevin Kline. They appeared together in a production of The Threepenny Opera at that time. After graduating, he worked for a touring company of Hair as a stage manager and travelled to Australia and New Zealand.
Personal life
In 1968, the bank married Marnie Fausch, his first wife. Before divorcing in 1970, the couple had one daughter. In 1990, Banks married Gennera Gonzalez Cebian, his second wife. They had fraternal twins, and Banks now have a stepdaughter from this union.
In April 2016, the bank was granted an honorary doctoral degree from Indiana University.
