Jon Fishman (born February 19, 1965) is an American drummer known for his work with Phish, which he co-founded in 1983 and in part named after him.
He is credited with co-writing nineteen Phish songs and eight with solo credit, with eight of them being released as a result of a solo project.
Early life
Fishman was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Syracuse, New York. From an early age, Fishman adored drums and imitated John Bonham, Led Zeppelin, Bill Bruford of Yes, and Keith Moon of The Who. In a suburb of Syracuse, he attended Jamesville-Dewitt High School. Since graduating in 1983, he attended the University of Vermont to study engineering. He met Mike Gordon and Trey Anastasio shortly after his arrival and formed the band Phish. He and Anastasio went to Goddard College, refusing to study engineering.
Personal life
Ella Cynthia, 20, Jerome (Rose) Lorelei, 19-30, Leo Mullay, 11, Fredrick (Freddie) George, 7-8, lives in Lincolnville, Maine, with fishman and his five children. In March 2018, the family appeared on an episode of the DIY Network home improvement program Maine Cabin Masters. He is a huge fan of the Cattle Decapitation band, who appeared on their 2019 album, Death Atlas.
Since 2017, he has hosted a radio show on WBFY-LP, a community radio station in Belfast, Maine. The original Jonny B. Fishman Radio Show was on display, but the show has since been renamed The Errant Path. When Phish is not on tour, Fishman hosts the show on Thursday evenings.
Krist Novoselic, a former Nirvana bassist, was inspired by the fishman to campaign in his local elections. Senator Bernie Sanders was endorsed by both the 2016 and 2020 Democratic primaries by the fishman. Sanders' ties in Burlington as well as his dedication to upholding the arts are the primary reasons for his support, according to Fishman. In 2017, he was named a selectman of Lincolnville, Maine.
Musical career
The band Phish was named after him (he is commonly referred to as "Fish" in some other words), but other explanations for the name have been given. In addition to drumming, he also performs back-up vocals and occasionally lead-vocals (usually on cover songs, most of whom are amusing), Will Smith's "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It," and Syd Barrett's "Bike" (Syd Barrett). His more recent vocal appearances include lead vocals on Phish's "Crosseyed and Painless" cover, as well as his vocal duties on Phish's "The Moma Dance," "Taste" and "Ghost." He is well-known on tour for his Electrolux vacuum cleaner solos and playing while wearing a donut-printed muumuu outfit. He has admitted to smoking cocaine before starting his band's careers early in the game.
Fishman dresses in a blue muumuu dress with a doughnut pattern on occasion. Phish applied to patent the pattern on Fishman's clothing in 2015, but the US Patent and Trademark Office refused to honor the request.
