Education and career
Bentley earned a Bachelor's degree in the United States. Stanford University's mathematic sciences department earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in mathematics in 1974 and M.S. He earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1976; as a student, he did internships at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. After receiving his Ph.D., he joined Carnegie Mellon University as an assistant professor of computer science and mathematics. Brian Reid, John Ousterhout, Jeff Eppinger, Joshua Bloch, and James Gosling were among Charles Leiserson's advisors at CMU. Bentley later joined Bell Laboratories, where he co-authored an enhanced Quicksort algorithm with Doug McIlroy.
He found the right answer to Klee's measurement problem, which involved a set of n rectangles: find the area of their union. Bentley and Thomas Ottmann invented the Bentley-Ottmann algorithm, which is a fast algorithm for finding all intersecting pairs within a series of line segments. He wrote the Programming Pearls column for the ACM magazine and then turned the papers into two books of the same name.
In 2004, Bentley was named recipient of the Dr. Dobb's Excellence in Programming Award.
