The New York Yankees have announced that legendary play-by-play commentator John Sterling is to retire with immediate effect at the age of 85. Sterling is synonymous with fans in the Bronx and has been the radio voice of the Yankees since 1989, famously calling 5,060 consecutive games from September 1989 to July 2019. In a statement released by the team on Monday afternoon, Sterling said: 'I am a very blessed human being. I have been able to do what I wanted, broadcasting for 64 years.

The errant ball had bloodshed on the streets, but the game was still being broadcast, and now footage of the incident as well as the veteran journalist thanking his fans has been posted. He was struck the day before and revealed: "I am fine, to all the Yankees fans." It struck me in the head, but I had a lot of muscle so I was fine.

After being plunked by a foul ball in Saturday night's match against the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling got closer to the action than he's ever been. Justin Turner, the Red Sox third baseman, fouled back the 3-2 pitch from New York reliever Clay Holmes in the top of the ninth innings in what was supposed to be a 3-1 Yankee victory. The ball bounced back across the home plate seats and crashed straight into the WFAN broadcast booth, where Sterling was seated.
