BBC commentator Guy Mowbray on capturing the mood of the nation and narrating England's fortunes... as an estimated 30 million fans prepare to tune to the Euro 2024 final

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW BY AADAM PATEL IN BERLIN: Guy Mowbray sits down in a Berlin cafe and recalls our encounter on the night that England stumbled to victory over Serbia in their first game of the tournament. Put simply, it wasn't the most optimistic of conversations about England's display in Gelsenkirchen but the BBC's lead commentator recalls his own words from the end of that game. 'I hope they (BBC) include it in the edit for the final, he says. 'I was trying to rationalise the performance and came out with, "Teams that win tournaments tend to grow into tournaments." I don't tend to remember these things but I hope that ages well.' Just four days after the Serbia game, Mowbray signed off England's 1-1 draw against Denmark with: 'Goodness me, that was a hard watch at times.'
The Premier League is poisoning our game and their hand in having FA Cup replays scrapped is another spoonful of arsenic down the throats of the smaller clubs, writes OLIVER HOLT

April 18, 2024
OLIVER HOLT: The Premier League announced the scrapping of FA Cup replays on Thursday, although of course that is not how the elite club owners presented it. They do not like to be candid about their greed. They do not like to be honest about their disdain for the rest of the football pyramid, the eco-system that is the kernel of their success but which they are hell-bent on destroying. So they tried to hide that part away. They told us that, actually, this was a good thing. They told us that they would be putting £33m more into grass roots football without saying that many multiples of that figure would be lost to grass roots football through the death of replays that are often the difference between profit and loss for lower league clubs.

Last year, Saka and Sons participated in Burberry's Spring/Summer 2024 campaign alongside international celebrities and models such as Tems, Rachel Weisz, and Jourdan Dunn.

JACK GAUGHAN AND JOE BERNSTEIN: Coincidence or not, Brian Horton suggests meeting at The Kenilworth, his hometown in a suburb just south of Manchester, where he has lived for 30 years. Punters make a point of saying hello as the landlord comes over for a chat. He is fondly remembered here after almost two years as the devil-may-care Manchester City manager who was sacked in 1993. He does the supporter branch gathers in the north, with regal tales of how Franny Lee tried to impress Luis Figo. He is often seen at the Etihad in the chairman's lounge. However, he was also the opposition captain on one of City's worst days, when Horton's Luton Town sent City down in a relegation shootout on the final day of the 1982-83 season.

IAN HERBERT: Everton's goalposts were moved, and that's why the punishment was so unfair

IAN HERBERT: Liverpool's Dock Road is more attractive than its name implies. From the red brick warehouses to the names of the old shipyards, 'Trafalgar,'Victoria', carved into the mighty granite dock wall, the city's rich maritime history is reflected in this illustrious granite dock wall. The turquoise plaque on the 150th anniversary of Ireland's Great Famine has been engraved with a touching simplicity. The majority of the 1,300,000 Irish migrants were moved through these gates.' The Dock Road in Liverpool lasted from 1989 to 1989, fading away like the pubs which thrived as the dock employees packed them out. But the last ten years have promised a different result. Everton Football Club's reconstruction since the Albert Dock's rebirth in the early 1980s is perhaps the most signifi-cant boost to the Liverpool club's revival.

To some, he is 'Bob the Builder,' the man who designed the Stadium of Light and Academy of Light, as well as providing Wembley Stadium and St George's Park for the FA. This 77-year-old from Coneville, County Durham, has been extremely busy, even taking the cockney rhyming words used by London taxibies to mean 'in a hurry.'

JOE BERNSTEIN: TV commentator Martin Tyler, who was fired from Sky Sports on Saturday, has been a regular thread in English football since the 1992 revolution. Tyler, who was in his mid-forties, knew football existed before the Premier League, but like Sir Alex Ferguson, embraced change and new ways without sacrificeing his values, whether as a broadcaster or a game lover. BRIAN BARWICK: John Motson was a true broadcasting legend who deserves all of the eulogies
www.dailymail.co.uk,
February 25, 2023
FORMER HEAD OF BBC SPORT, BRIAN BARWICK: Former TV presenter Motty was a fan of the fan. He was a fan himself. He gathered programs, teamsheets, and newspaper cuttings, and with his mix of coloured pens, he'd make a commentary chart for every game he covered, almost works of art in their own right. Many were framed and now adorn the walls of lucky auction prize winners from a variety of charitable causes Motty aided. John Walker Motson was eccentric, a creature of habit, and irritable, but it was all based on his determination to give the best commentary he could - and the most accurate.

The story of John Motson's iconic sheepskin coat

KIERAN GILL: Walk into the National Football Museum in Manchester and you will find John Motson's sheepskin coat and Sir Geoff Hurst's 1966 World Cup final shirt and George Best's first pair of boots. The made-to-measure, knee-length coat became part of football's fabric - literally. It was synonymous with the man behind the mic who never claimed for a single one of his broadcast expenses. Hides Couture in Hertfordshire, £2,000, was his last purchase in 2018. Motson had no intention to convert the sheepskin coat into anything other than a source of warmth. He wore it to discourage his teeth from chatting in the blustery commentary booths that were his domain. 'People just latched on to it,' Motson said. I didn't want to turn it into a word,' he said.'
