After borrowing costs increased to a 22-year high, the Federal Reserve voted to hold interest rates steady for the fourth straight meeting today. Officials will announce their decision at 2 p.m., but economists predict there is no chance of a cut, implying that the rate will remain unchanged at 5.5 percent. The Fed's aggressive rate hikes were supposed to pour cold water on stagnant inflation, which peaked at 9.1 percent in June 2022. In December, the annual inflation rate slowed to 3.4 percent. However, it is still much higher than the Fed's 2 percent target, which means a rate cut appears unlikely today.
