John Haven Emerson Life

John Haven "Jack" Emerson (February 5, 1906 – February 4, 1997) was an American chemist who specialized in respiratory appliances.

He is perhaps best known for his efforts in improving the iron lung.

Early life

Emerson was born in 1906 in New York City, the son of Dr. Haven Emerson, the city's health commissioner, and Grace Parrish Emerson, Maxfield Parrish's sister. He was named after his paternal grandfather (1840-1913), who was also a medical doctor.

He bought a rudimentary machine shop from the estate of a local entrepreneur at the age of 22. He moved the machinery from a small warehouse in Harvard Square, Massachusetts, where he designed teaching machines for professors and researchers of Boston-area medical schools and subsequently produced many inventions over the years. He developed a Barcroft-Warburg apparatus for tissue respiration experiments in 1928. He created a new type of micromanipulator in 1930, which later saw use in the manufacture of electronic parts. Emerson invented an oxygen tent in 1931, which included an improved cooling system.
