Life and career

Drinkwater was introduced in Leytonstone, Essex, (now Greater London), to actor/writer Albert Edwin Drinkwater (1851-1973), and Annie Beck (née Brown), and worked as an insurance clerk. He was one of the group of poets associated with the Gloucestershire village of Dymock, as well as Rupert Brooke and others, during the First World War.

Abraham Lincoln's play Abraham Lincoln had his first major success in 1918. He followed it with others in a similar vein, including Mary Stuart and Oliver Cromwell. His Lincoln play was adapted for a two-reel short film made by Lee de Forest and J. Searle Dawley starring Frank McGlynn Sr. as Lincoln in 1924, and debuted in de Forest's Phonofilm sound-on-film technique.

He had been publishing poetry since The Death of Leander in 1906; the first volume of his Collected Poems was released in 1923. (e.g.) He also edited anthologies and wrote literary criticism (e.g. Swinburne (1913): An estimate (1913) and later became the manager of Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

He was married to Daisy Kennedy, Benno Moiseiwitsch's ex-wife, with whom he had a child named Penny.
