Early life
John Dolmayan was born in Beirut, Lebanon, to Armenian parents. His family immigrated to California after the Lebanese Civil War.
At the age of two, Dolmayan first became interested in drums. His father was a saxophone player, and if his father would watch his father play, he'd imitate his father's drummer. He learned to play the drums by putting on records and exercising for hours a day, and then continued his drumming for years. Dolmayan's musical style is influenced by anything he could get his hands on, including the jazz albums of his father and the rock albums he shared with his relatives.
Dolmayan is a fan of The Who, and cites Who drummer Keith Moon for his most fame. Led Zeppelin's John Bonham, Stewart Copeland of The Police, and Rush's Neil Peart are among his notable influences.
Personal life
Dolmayan is married to Diana Dolmayan, who is the sister of Tankian's wife Angela, thereby making them brothers-in-law.
Dolmayan is very socially active on his social media pages, as his colleagues, but unlike most members of System of a Down, especially Tankian, Dolmayan, favour Donald Trump's presidency. Tankian has said that being politically opposed to his bandmate and brother-in-law is "frustrating."
Dolmayan, a long-time comic book collector, owns Toro Comics, a Las Vegas comic book store.
