Early life
Barbata was born in Passaic, New Jersey, on April 1, 1945, to Martina and Charles Barbata. He was raised in Saranac Lake, New York, until the age of seven and later in Nutley, New Jersey. His mother was an Austrian immigrant who worked as a record keeper at a hospital, and his father, a firefighter and mechanic, was a firefighter and mechanic. He was the youngest child of three brothers, followed by his older brother Chuck and sister Lauren. His first claim to fame came as a young child when his mother discovered a man who was trapped in a boat that had run out of gas. Albert Einstein, the man who held the child as Barbata's mother delivered them to shore, was the man.
Barbata's earliest brother played in the marching band, sparking his fascination with percussion. After showing an interest in drums, his brother took him to a friend's house, where Barbata played on his first trap set. Teresa Brewer's first song he ever learned to play was "Put Another Nickel In" by Teresa Brewer.
Personal life
Barbata retired and built a house and recording studio in Comptche, California, at the age of 33. He performed well in the area. Barbata married Angela Evans, a Oklahoma native and painter, on July 3, 1981. They both have released two albums together, California and Oklahoma. Their daughter Leah was born in 1987. They then moved to Ada, Oklahoma, where he now resides. His wife (Angela) died of cancer after 34 years of marriage in 2016. Barbata continues to perform, often with former band members or his singer-songwriter daughter.
