After the slayings that occurred between 1990 and 1993, Rifkin, now 64, was found guilty of nine counts of second-degree murder and sentenced to 203 years in prison. The majority of his victims were sex workers, and detectives reopened the investigation in an effort to find fresh leads in 2021, with two of them having never been identified. This time, they were aided by television producer Peter Reiss, who had cultivated a rapport with Rifkin over the years after being first interviewed for a science documentary about 'the biological causes of violence' in 1998. The two men sat down for the killer's first interview in nearly a decade, which is expected to air as part of A+E's forthcoming two-part special titled Cold Case Files: The Rifkin Murders.

Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, 59, have been charged with first and second degree murder in connection with three victims' deaths. Authorities suspect him of being the 'prime suspect' in another murder, Maubery-Barnes. He is now being prosecuted in connection with Carmen Vargas, a 1989 sex worker whose body was discovered tied near Heuermann's house. The inquiry was launched by the Nassau County District Attorney's Office.
