Early life
Joseph Dunnigan III, a Los Angeles native, was born Flanigan III. He has said that his mother, Nancy, died shortly after being born, and that his surname was changed to Flanigan after he was adopted by his stepfather, business executive John Flanigan. His family migrated to a small ranch near Reno, Nevada, when he was six years old.
Flanigan attended boarding school in Ojai, California, where he appeared in the school production of A Streetcar Named Desire from the age of 14. He earned a history degree at the University of Colorado, where he appeared in the play Coriolanus. On the advice of a friend, he took acting classes to beat his shyness but did not intend to pursue a career in acting. Flanigan spent a year at Sorbonne in Paris, where he learned French.
Personal life
In 1996, Flanigan married Katherine Kousi, an actress and painter. They have three sons. It was reported in early 2014 that they had broken up.
In the Waterkeepers' Alliance downhill skiing competition in Lake Louise in January 2006, Flanigan received two awards, an event where fellow Stargate lead Richard Dean Anderson attended as well. He now lives in Malibu, California. In the Woolsey Fire on November 10, 2018, the Malibu home he was renting from a local family was destroyed.
Career
After graduating, he embarked on a writing career. On behalf of President George H. W. Bush's advance staff, he served on Capitol Hill. I worked for several New York City newspapers, including Town & Country and Interview magazine, for a short time. Gerald Gordon taught Neighborhood Playhouse, then went back to Los Angeles in 1994 to pursue an acting career, on the advice of some of his peers.
Flanigan appeared in numerous television series, including Profiler, First Monday, and Sisters, before he found his calling on Stargate Atlantis as Lt. Colonel John Sheppard is the head of the National Guard Corps. He lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where the series was shot during the week, and travelled to Los Angeles over the weekend to visit his wife and children. He also contributed to the series and wrote the scripts for the Stargate Atlantis second season episode "Epiphany" and the fourth season episode "Outcast."
According to Flanigan's manager, "talent agency UTA filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on September 24, alleging that the actor owes $99,225 in commissions,' according to the Hollywood Reporter. "This is the first time I'm hearing about this.'" Wesley Snipes, a comedian who was equally amazed, was the subject of a similar lawsuit by UTA. In December 2008, the case was settled.
Flanigan appears in Brooks Institute photographer John A. Russo's forthcoming book About Face. Smile Train will earn a share of the proceeds.
