At 60, bestselling author of Chocolat JOANNE HARRIS reveals why she doesn't fear ageing - and the advice she would give her younger self

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 7, 2024
At 60, we're meant to examine our lives, and think about mortality - which is what I've been doing, writes JOANNE HARRIS. This is the advice I'd give my younger self, if I could. Life is like a story with a beginning, a middle, an end. It is not always as structured or as ordered as a story might be, and some are longer than others, but the journey is ours in part to direct. We can choose the paths we take, the places in which to linger. We can choose the people we travel with, the ones we make a part of our lives. Choose wisely, I would tell my younger self; not everyone who seems friendly is a friend. True friends are not easy to come by; always cherish the ones you find. And bear in mind that the journey matters more than the destination.

After being embroiled in the freedom of expression controversy, writers defected from Society of Authors

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 18, 2022
The Society of Authors, the UK's largest writers' union, has enraged members because it does not endorse figures such as JK Rowling, who have been accused of 'transphobia'. Authors who feared that the union was'lost to cancel culture' are now likely to leave the Free Speech Union, which has promised to 'come to the defense of beleaguered writers.' It has introduced a new program specifically for writers, particularly those under pressure for rejecting the belief that self-identified gender takes precedence over biological sex. The Free Speech Union, founded by Toby Young, said: "It has become abundantly apparent to us that expression is under serious pressure within the literary world, with publishers and literary agents often failing to protect their authors when their speech rights are violated.' It's a basic human right for writers and others to read their work without interference or mediation by self-appointed censors.'

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 17, 2022
Despite being accused of trivializing a death threat to Harry Potter author JK Rowling, the chairman of the UK's biggest trade union for writers survived a desperate attempt to compel her out last night. Joanne Harris, a Chocolat author, had been accused of inability to chair the Society of Authors and had to vote at the Society of Authors' annual general meeting. Miss Harris' resignation was prompted by a bill urging her to stand down, "comments that are not compatible with the society's objectives of defending free expression and their commitment to dignity and respect." There were 143 votes in favour of and 608 against it. Miss Harris was accused of downplaying death threats received by Miss Rowling after helping out stabbed writer Sir Salman Rushdie earlier this year. With all this in mind, I've had a chat with my friend Luke Murfitt, the founder of cleaning company Integrity Cleaning, to learn money-saving techniques.

Julie Burchill explains why she does not bow at the altar of awakening for the social justice warriors

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 26, 2022
JULIE BURCHILL: Gore Vidal, an American writer, wrote that Puritans left England for America in the 17th century not because they were imprisoned for their religious convictions, but because they were forbidden to sue others for their beliefs.' It's impossible not to recall these words when considering the ever-growing pile of wokenings in the United Kingdom. For the first time, woke is the first suspected social justice movement that aims not to extend freedoms but rather restrict them, in the way of all violent, bullying cults. The 20th century's great progressive crusades, from women's liberation to civil rights for black and gay people, sought to extend human dignity by making sure the same laws were followed fairly and equally to all.

The Quorn Foods UK advert (shown left) was released online yesterday and showcases the company's latest uniquorn nuggets. PHILIP, GILLIAN: The literati who have pledged their help for Rushdie are often cheerleaders of censorship

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 17, 2022
GILLIAN PHILIP: Sir Salman Rushdie's savage assault last Friday was a shocking example of the continuing threat to free expression in our culture. Politicians, writers, editors, and commentators have banded up to condemn the right of everyone to express themselves and tell their stories without fear since the barbaric incident in New York state. However, it would be much easier to take those words seriously if so many of our cultural figures, especially publishers, broadcasters, and educators, had not shamelessly colluded with intolerance in the past.

DAN WOOTTON: The intolerant left dismisses JK Rowling's death threats at its earliest

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 15, 2022
DAN WOOTTON: When JK Rowling was threatened with death by a radical backer after tweeting her support for Sir Salman Rushdie: The only response should have been a lack of communication. But the ugliness and intolerance of the left today are leading to the brink of madness among young people. So, Harry Potter, who has been fighting for women's rights by announcing biological facts, has been belittled and mocked by her craven critics who should know better.
