Joanna Gleason (née Hall, born June 2, 1950) is a Canadian actress and singer.
She is a Tony Award-winning musical theatre actress who has appeared in a number of major film and television roles.
Early life
Joanne Hall was born in Winnipeg, the eldest of three siblings born to television producer and game show host Monty Hall, and his partner, Marilyn (née Plottel), died in 2017. At the time of her birth, her father was working at the Canada Wheat Board and had changed his name from Halparin to Hall. He began his television career and rose to fame as the host of Let's Make a Deal.
The Hall family migrated to New York in May 1956 and then moved to Los Angeles in the early 1960s.
In 1968, Hall graduated from Beverly Hills High School. She appeared in The Music Man, The Mikado, The Grass Harp, and The Madwoman of Chaillot, three of the school's productions. Gleason received acting lessons from John Ingle, the soap opera queen who taught at BHHS from 1955 to 1985. She continued her education at UCLA, then Occidental College, from which she graduated. Gleason has worked as a tutor, giving lectures and seminars all around the country.
Personal life
Gleason has been married three times. She was married to acting coach Paul G. Gleason (not actor Paul X. Gleason), whose surname she retained professionally even though they divorced in Nevada on June 28, 1982. She married Michael Bennahum later that year. Aaron David Gleason, her first marriage, has just one child, Gleason.
Since 1994, Gleason has been married to actor Chris Sarandon. The two appeared in Broadway's short-lived 1991 musical Nick & Nora and in 1998's Thorn and Bloom, Let the Devil Wear Black, and American Perception.
Sharon Hall Kessler, a television writer/director, and Emmy Award-winning television writer/director Richard Hall are two of Gleason's siblings.
Career
Although Gleason began her acting career on television, she is best known for her stage and musical theatre performances. She made her Broadway debut in 1977 with I Love My Wife, for which she was honoured with a Theatre World Award.
Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing, Peter Nichols' A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, Nick & Nora's A Day in the Woods, (for which she also appeared in the PBS Great Performances production of the musical), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and The Cartells are among the many Broadway credits including Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing, Peter Nichols' A Day in the Woods.
Her film and television careers began in 1977 with her first appearance on her father's show Let's Make A Deal. In 1979, she appeared in Hello, Larry, a supporting role in the oft-maligned sitcom's two-season run. Hannah and Her Sisters and Heartburn were two of her film appearances (both 1986). Kimberly played Beaver's ex-wife in the television film Still the Beaver. In Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), Gleason appeared in Crimes and Misdemeanors again, this time as Allen's wife.
