Jo Shapcott FRSL (born 24 March 1953, London) is an English poet, editor, and lecturer who has received the National Poetry Prize, the Commonwealth Poetry Prize, the Costa Book of the Year Award, the Forward Poetry Award, and the Cholmondeley Award.
Early life and education
Jo Shapcott was born in London on March 24, 1953. She lived in Hempstead and attended Cavendish School in the town before beginning to study as an undergraduate at Trinity College, Dublin. She studied at St Hilda's College, Oxford, later receiving a Harkness Fellowship to Harvard.
Career
At Royal Holloway, University of London, Shapcott teaches on a master's degree in creative writing. She was a visiting professor at Newcastle University's School of English Literature, Language, and Linguistics, and was a Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Oxford Brookes University from 2003 to 2005. She has worked with the Arvon Foundation for many years. and a former president of the Poetry Society.
In 2002, Shapcott was appointed CBE. She initially accepted the honour but later decided not to return when the British government was planning to invade Iraq. "I can't possibly accept this," she wrote to the Cabinet Office. "I was being diagnosed and treated for cancer," she said, so big public statements weren't in the cards. "I was just too ill."
Shapcott was accepted as a trustee to The Griffin Trust For Excellence In Poetry in 2016. She appeared in A New Divan: A Lyrical Dialogue Between East and West in 2019.
