Early life and background
He was born in a Hindu family with musical roots in Kolkata and invented the "Dwarkan harmonium," which was popular in West Bengal, India. He graduated from the University of Calcutta's Scottish Church College (he played soccer, hockey, polo, and billiards). He also enjoyed painting, but he had to stop practicing these due to an eye injury in a soccer match.
He reverted to music as a child. Girija Shankar, Mohammed Sagir Khan, and Mohammed Dabir Khan had all trained in vocals. He took tabla lessons from Masit Khan of the Farukhabad gharana and became his senior disciple.
Career
He was the founder of Sourav Academy of Music and closely affiliated with the 'Sangeet Research Academy.' He produced music for several Bengali films, of which Jadubhatta, Andhare Alo, and Rajlakshmi o Srikanta (1958) are among the many Bengali films worth mentioning. He also produced music for the Academy Award-nominated animated short Bead Game, directed by Ishu Patel for the National Film Board of Canada. Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's residence, 25 Dixon Lane in Bowbazar, Kolkata, was frequented by musicians, be it local or visitors, and so was the site of several recitals, most notably a Raga Chhayanat performed by Bade Ghulam Ali Khan in 1954.
